Fun with displays

I just bought a new Dell 24" Widescreen LCD Display for my home office. Since I already had two 19" Dell LCDs, I also had to buy a second graphics card for my Mac Pro. Of course, all the newer graphics cards have dual heads on them, so I now have four ports to play with. Obviously, that meant that I needed to plug in my old 18" no-name-brand LCD as a fourth display. But what do I do with four displays? Easy.

  1. 19" Dell #1 – Mail, full screen, always on
  2. 24" Dell – Anything I’m working on, so Safari, Firefox, Fetch or Transmit, Fireworks, TextMate, Terminal, etc
  3. 19" Dell #2 – iTunes, Adium (chat), Colloquy (IRC)
  4. 18" Old LCD – This one is the cool one. I used this technique to detach widgets from my Dashboard and put them there. This way, I’ve got weather for all the places I care about, all my stock quotes, and a calendar always on my screen.

I’m definitely happy with this new setup. Working with 1920×1200 pixels on my main display is great. I can actually put two windows next to each other and focus on both without having to switch between them.
